I have been asked to identify this aircraft photographed in SA:

1. Type / manufacturer
2. Role.
3. Was it used in SAAF./ civil aviation
4. Period.
5. In any museum..anywhere?

I agree, it's a 504.
A whole lot were donated to SA after WW1 as part of the Imperial Gift, to establish the SAAF. The "gift" also included DH4s, DH9s, SE5a, hangars, vehicles, tools, spares etc. Six of the original hangars are now the home of the SAAF Museum at Swartkop.
Other recipients of Imperial Gift "instant air forces" were Canada, Australia New Zealand and India. Though India did not create an air force and NZ did not initially want it.
See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Gift - I wrote most of the article.

Avro 504K one of 30 supplied to the SAAF.

The tail number of the aircraft starts with a 4.. which is also the series of tail numbers allocated to the 504K's.

Used as an Ab-Initio trainer by the SAAF.

The paint scheme that it has on it is possibly around 1924,pity that the roundel can't be seen as that can define the period more accurately.
