Question for Piet and the other Mirage IIICZ aficionados : I recall seeing French Mirage IIICs variably having yellow primer coloured rear ventral panels and gun tray panel. Can someone confirm either / both was common to natural metal SAAF Mirages ?

Hi Mistral

What techniques do you use to make sure the left and right side markings are the same?

A small steel ruler, eyeball Mk. 1 and some strategically placed masking tape guides - for the fuselage GT stripe. For the intakes, eyeball Mk. 1. :smt023

Good idea to mask the red Malcolm!

I'm not sure how common the yellow primer was, but this rare shot of the undersides (on very close inspection) reveals that most of the fuel bays were indeed in chromate yellow, as is the forward section of the ventral fin. Only 803 appears to have a chromate gun pack.

Great pic Sean, thanks :smt023 . You learn something new about SAAF Mirage III colour schemes every day. I wonder why those areas were not painted in silver. And the leading edge of the ventral fin - what's all that about ? Well, I think I'll go for a chromate primed tank and gun pack as well as the leading edge of the fin :D

Ok, so masking in progress for chromate yellow underside bits :

ImageIMG_0453 - 800 by Malcolm Reid, on Flickr

Mixes of Tamiya XF-4 yellow green for the front panel and a dash of XF-5 green for the rear panel and ventral fin. Then oversprayed to lighten using XF-20 medium grey, followed by some XF-3 yellow. Gloss varnish then thinly applied to add a slight satin sheen :

Primed panels still need to be weathered.

Finally finished :

Equipped with two AIM-9B Sidewinders and 2 JL-100 combined tank/rocket pods. There are photos of natural metal CZs with this weapons fit so it's not fictitious :D

Markings are a combination of home printed decals (Bokkies - thanks Sean), specially printed on order by MavDecals (Thanks Zane), kit decals and some masked and painted - like the GT stripes and the E on the vertical stab.

I've now built three of these Italeri Mirage IIIs and can say that, although at times challenging to assemble, they build into nice replicas of my favourite delta.
