Pilot lucky to walk away, but not sure if it was self induced.

Working on Fire helicopter crashes, seriously injuring 1

A Working on Fire (WoF) official is in a serious condition in Tygerberg hospital after a helicopter crashed in Bredasdorp, Western Cape, on Thursday afternoon.

Speaking to News24 from OR Tambo International Airport, WoF managing director Trevor Abrahams said details surrounding the incident is still "very vague".

"It appears that the pilot lost control upon landing after a routine exercise flight in the area," Abrahams said.

He said the pilot escaped with a few minor bruises, but an official on the ground was seriously injured.

It is unclear whether windy conditions complicated the landing. 27 km/h winds were forecast for the area.

"I am on my way to the scene now to assess the situation," Abrahams said.

"We will have a better understanding of what happened by this evening."

Herewith the report on today's helicopter accident:
At 13:05 this afternoon a Working on Fire Firefighting helicopter on tender to Overberg Fire Rescue crashed next to the helipad at the Bredasdorp Fire Station. The chopper was busy re positioning on the pad when a malfunction occurred causing the helicopter to go down. The pilot suffered only cuts and bruises but the ground staff assisting in directing the helicopter suffered more serious injuries and was hospitalized in a serious but stable condition. The Civil Aviation Authority is doing an investigation and a internal team from Working on Fire has also been appointed to investigate the incident.

A replacement helicopter will be arriving in Bredasdorp on Friday morning so aerial firefighting operations in the Overberg will not be affected.

I'm waiting for the Blackhawk to join the WOF "squadron".

Looks like another wire strike, the rotor mast is ripped off.

Well with one Huey down I am sure the Blackhawk will replace it,it is being fitted with new avionics what I have heard first.

Replacement Huey already on its way to Bredasdorp (if it has not arrived already).

The Blackhawk is expensive to operate, WoF have spare Hueys.
