I kind of like the Embraer range.

They have a really good range of "special purpose" planes based on their small jet airliners such as MPA, AE&W, ISTAR, etc.

Actually the most interesting part of this article for me is the mention that the Kawasaki airlifter is also a contender.
There is/was some serious doubt about whether Japanese law allowed them to be exported.

Looks like an aircraft that would be well suited for the SAAF.

Apart from a heavier max payload, the aircraft is smaller and has less range than a C-130J? Often the space available maxes out before the weight limit, which favours the longer C-130J.

Just a reminder about a pair of articles by Darren examining our airlift requirements and options:
Tactical airlift - https://www.africandefence.net/the-saaf ... l-airlift/
Strategic airlift - https://www.africandefence.net/the-saaf ... c-airlift/

The RNZAF is looking at all options. The C-130s in the fleet are some of the oldest still in international operation. However the RNZAF is a very small force and aircraft are operated to their maximum of their efficient lifespan.

I suspect that the most likely replacement candidate that fits within the budget would be the C-130J.

I'm struggling to find correct data, but I think that the KC-690 has better range than the C-130??
The internal volume is within less than 1 m3, with the KC-390 being wider and higher but shorter in length. The C-130J-30 is basically a stretched C-130H. It do not actually improve things much as far as outsize freight is concerned.
I think that all indications are that the KC-390 will be cheaper than the C-130 and all things considered I would think that the KC-390 is a better prospect than the C-130J.
It can deliver more cargo over a greater distance than the C-130 at a much higher speed....

How good is it at using short rough strips?
