I was looking for a small fine tooth saw. Here is what I found, http://www.capewatch.co.za/category/pre ... saw-frames, needless to say I bought a piercing saw and blades. Their tools are affordable with a good variety to choose from. I could not get what I wanted from hobby shops.
Browse the site you may just find something you need.

I am looking for a small diameter punch set, anybody know where to find such a set?

Also bought from Capewatch. Got my magnifying glasses head set thingy from them. Hobby shops charge 5 times for the same thing.

Pegasus Hobby Supplies has a RP Toolz 0.5mm to 2.0mm punch and die set for R1350.00.

A little more than the 70 Euros you mentioned but they are the only source of these tools in South Africa that I know of.

You have to be very practical and sensible with your purchases from hobby shops these days.

Thanks for the info, based on today's Euro price R13.87 X 70 = R970.90 without shipping and local customs charges I think the local price is reasonable.
Amazing how needs expand with our hobby. Never enough tools!!!
I also make my own small tools although very basic stuff. 4 & 6 inch nails make very handy chisels if sharpened to a knife like edge do fine trimming on seams and to remove parts from part trees. Gives a clean cut and very little sanding needed. Rechargeable electric tooth brush makes a good little orbital sander. Cut the brush off glue a piece of rubber on, trim and glue the sand paper on the rubber. (wet or dry sanding)

Seems to me that Pegasus hobby supplies has been the best kept secret.
I am rather "the thunder in" (cannot say it in Afrikaans will be rude) because I have ordered from RP productions in the past and paid shipping and customs fees.
All the while the stuff is available locally.

Should have started chatting on the forum a long time ago. However, I have learnt a lot from some of the guys who are really talented.

Having a browse through Cape Watch's catalogue - Their copper/ brass granules might be a good substitute for nose weight instead of putty, nuts and bolts

Hi Stratobat,
Pay your local wheel and tyre shop a visit. When they do wheel balancing they pull the old balancing weights off and throw them in a bin.
If you are polite to the owner and tell him about your hobby he will certainly oblige and give you some weights.
You also have to be picky and only take the lead weights which gets installed between the tyre and rim. I cut a piece off the lead weight and beat it flat with a hammer. Then you either roll, fold or cut strips to fit where you need to place the weight.
Weights used on mag wheels are stuck on with double sided tape (difficult to get the double sided tape off as well) and are very hard to cut (vice and hacksaw does the job). These weights look inviting because they are quite flat and also come in different weights. I doubt if they are 100% lead. Might work on 1/32 & 1/24 aircraft where you have more space.

Good ideas but I was thinking about the granules and how they could work on models that are notorious tailsitters where you have to get creative and utilise every available space.

Sort of like how one might use Deluxe Materials Liquid Gravity, I imagine?

Thanks for the info, good to know about alternative suppliers as well. Their price looks fair, however, what kills the spirit is shipping and customs cost.

I am off to Thailand and New Zealand tomorrow evening returning on 25/03/2017.
I will swing by the hobby shops in New Zealand and see what they have on offer.
Should be interesting to compare with our hobby shops.

For the guys in Joburg. This weekend Hobby X is in town at the Ticket pro dome.

Although most of the show is Bleh. Cape Watch is there with limited stock like diamond needle files, normal files, cutting implements, tweezers, magnifying glasses and light.

I hear that there are several well stocked hobby shops in Auckland. You should try to visit the WNW bunch as well. It always fascinates me what an interest in aviation one finds in NZ. Look at all the warbirds.
