I have been pulling these documents apart and adding other information from other sources for months now and am making slow but steady progress through this lot.

I have downloaded the lot & have a total of 498 pdf files amounting to 96 Gb :D

That's around 20+ DVD's worth or around 135+ CD's

Viva for having an uncapped connection =D> I've still got smoke coming from my internet cables

Hi Kremlin;

Do you think there is a possibility of me getting something from your download; 5 squadron diary of their participation in the Desert campaign 1942-1943?

Hi Darren.
Our archives have started on a scanning project but there are other much older, more delicate files needing to be scanned first.
They are looking at doing the War Diaries first when they get to the WWII stuff as it is the most used, therefor most at risk.
For those who want to split the pdf files into units, there are PDF Splitter programs one can google and download.

I honestly don't know how you guys do it. I've only downloaded a few of the docs so far and it already looks overwhelming.

I presume you've set up your own database for all the SAAF-related data you've collected, including this. Mind if I ask you what you're using?

That's excellent news Stefaan, I'm glad the process has begun and I fully understand that this sort of thing takes time to complete. Do you know what the plans are for the publication of the electronic copies once each batch is complete?

Hi.
Don't know what the Internet role will be.
For years I have asked if we can at least have the indexes on the net.
The staff are all eager and very helpful, so I am sure they will do what they can to help getting it on the net.
Be good
Stefaan

Sure :smt023

Each pdf file is around 250mb .. I've tagged all the 5 squadron ones & it's 1.5gb.

Drop me a postal adress via PM & I'll burn them & send you a DVD.

Cheers

Good idea! List the index online and offer the docs for sale on disk - make some loose change for the museum.

I have printed most of it off on to paper and then pull it apart by putting into my own data base

ie
Each Sqn (this is broken up into seperate files ie (air crew for each month, aerial victouries, aircraft losses etc)
Each OTU
Roll of Honour
Aerial Victories
Type of Aircraft used

Hi Stefaan

I don't know how complete the records are, but the index I have lists:

N°5 Wing appearing in AIR 54/ 100 -103
N° 5 AD appearing in AIR 54/151

Cheers
