Hi Guys

How good are the MAV decals from Aviation shop. I started a F-86 Sabre, and am considering giving her SAAF decals from Korea?

If you're not in Jhb, you can order your MAV Decals from The Airforce Shop and support this Forum.

Hi Drifter,

I have not had any problems with decals from MAVDecals. Make sure you seal the decal sheet before cutting out and applying the individual decals to your model. I use Microscale's Liquid Decal Film for this process and apply two coats with a soft wide brush. You can clean the brush using lacquer thinners.

Regards,
Stratobat

MAV recommends the following:

1. Spray decals with clear varnish (gloss or matt)
2. Cut out decals as close tpo design as possible
3. Dip decal in clean water till slipping off backing
4. Apply micrset on model as required
5. Wait for decals to dry
6. Clear coat model if required

Hi Drifter,

The instructions that accompany the MAVDecals decal sheets are as per Dean's post, so you should be fine :smt023

The only reason I use Microscale's Liquid Decal Film is because it was the first method I tried and it worked for me so I did not bother experimenting with various varnishes, etc.

Regards,
Stratobat

My 2 cents worth, I use Mav decals all the time and think they are great. It also seems to me like Zane has invested in a better printer recently because the quality of printing compared to a few years ago is much better (they used to be very pixelated) In terms of the clear coat, I once had an issue where I used enamel varnish (Tamiya) and it damaged the decal film and the printed ink. I thus now only use acrylic clear (either Tamiya or Humbrol) and have never experienced the problem again.

my 2c

The pixelation is depending on the artwork being used. No matter what printer is being used, if the art work is pixelated it will print it like that. Most of the artwork is now with this, but some of the older stuff might still have it.

I have been using a lot of decals printed by Zane the last few weeks and they are awesome. Some of the decals was designed by him others was designed by Chris from Aviation shop. The Aviation shop decals can only be bought from Aviation shop though.

I use Micro liquid decal film, which I apply with a brush, about two coats per decal. This dries within a few minutes. I tried the Tamiya rattle can once. The combination of air and paint actually moved and spoiled the decals on the sheet. Also, the propellant might attack the decal as well. I would suggest maybe to decant some and airbrush it on after it de-gassed.

I use Tamiya gloss enamel (X-22 I think the number is) thinned with lacquer thinners. As always with this mix, run a couple of light coat as opposed to trying one shot. The idea is to seal the decal ink. Always worked for me.
