Hi there awesome people,
I like other would like to know what my chances at being accepted would be.
I am in Grade 11 and my first term marks are as follows:

Depends...how many times do you plan on going to selections?

Your chances are small , even if you have good marks. About 3 out of a group of 50 people get selected. Sometimes not even one. Most important of all is you need passion, and second of all you need to be able to show it. When you get through to interviews they want to see if you know something about the air force. What planes they fly, where some squadrons are based, some history about the air force. They will probably ask you who the boss of the air force is. Just dont mention anything about the bush war

You can apply as soon as possible. But I heard something that next selections are only again going to be around October ? But apply now , and just too make sure , again at the beginning of October. But call them and ask them everything you want to know!

Just curious as to why knowledge of the Border War is a bad thing?

Thanks, this was really helpful.
I really think I have the passion since it's been the only thing I've ever wanted to do. I will go to selections as many times as possible.
I know a lot of the SAAF and have adequate knowledge on their history.
Let's hope that all goes well.
And ja, a burning question.... Why not mention the bush war??

Just the mentioning of it to certain people that is on the board. Not sure why... I got the tip from an old Colonel. I thought he was joking but he seemed pretty serious. Never bothered to ask though

It should be pretty obvious why talking about that conflict is not a good idea.
You will meet people who were on both sides of that conflict (who outrank you) so it's better to rather shut up than to tread on a "landmine" with someone who has the power to either end your career before it starts or to make life really difficult for you once you are in.

Whilst it is indeed glaringly obvious, the point I am making (perhaps too subtly?) is that one can't simply stick their hand in the sand and ignore the history of one's organisation. :o

But the colonel wasnt referring to people from the "northern" side of the conflict, which is why I wasnt sure what he meant by it. Otherwise , yeah, it would have been obvious.

Referring to your comment H1017412. In my opinion I believe that is what our country is trying to do. One thing that bothered me was the Air Force's 90th birthday. Yes, it was a good air show but it was just another air show. Maybe because in their eyes the Air Force was at the time only "16" years old :?:
