I wonder whether anyone knows where one might be able to find a serviceable Snecma Atar engine, either a 9C or 9K-50. Now that they are no longer in service I am hoping that there might be some available.
Any assistance or advice where to look would be gratefully received.

Armscor is the only agency authorised to dispose of SANDF assets.

Think it is highly unlikely that the SAAF still has any serviceable Atar 09C / 09K50 engines - these were largely disposed of along with the Mirage F1AZ and Cheetah systems.

Denel Aviation might still have since they operate a Cheetah or two, you might also want to contact the Paramount Group - www.paramountgroup.com or Aerosud - www.aerosud.co.za

Good luck!

Yeah, the SAAF Museums have large signs with big exclamation marks near the engine. They also had to remove a few WWII flight instruments because of the same thing.

OK, so somebody has to ask: what would one do with a serviceable Atar 9C or 9K-50? Power a dragster? Build the meanest skaapbraai in town?

Darkknight - So is my old watch. A lot of aircraft bits made of depleted Ur are declared so but you'd have to eat it for it to do any harm, and then probably only on the way out ...

A skaapbraai is like an oversized rotisserie, used to roast a whole sheep ("skaap") over coals. South Africans are well known for (i) building / designing their own skaapbraais; and (ii) incorporating whatever motors they have on hand (usually wiper motors) into the design, to rotate the sheep.
