Overall how would you rate the organisation of the events?

Had a chance to take a stroll around the vehicle column this morning. Very nice.

I can't comment on how well it was organised, but.

It caused alot of chaos traffic wise. As a resident of the area, the last thing we want to do is sit in traffic that is a CF on a good day. It took me more than an hour to get home on Wednesday from Parow. The amount of swearing coming out of my car would have made the devil break into tears!

As much as I love aviation and anything military, I personally think having it literally on the doorstep of residential areas was not a good idea.
If I was a beachfront resident, I would be pretty annoyed having stands erected right infront of my flat. I would love to know how residents got in and out of their premises when I had just enough space to run through and this was on Tuesday.

Another factor to consider are pets and how the noise affects them, I think this applied more to the Muizemberg residents.

I think about this event in two minds, one is the excitement and my love of anything military, but the other is the chaos it caused for residents and pet owners alike.

One more thing is the sheer cost of this whole exercise. I'm not going to be popular for saying this but I feel it's money wasted and could have been put to better use on an already strained country.

Yes something like this only happens once in a while but as a resident of the area I wasn't too impressed...maybe I'm just getting old!

Personally, I think the Capetonians are just too proper and whiny. And I say that as one myself. I never picked up the same amount of complaints as being aired in Cape Town when the event was held in PE or Durban or other on FB or Twitter or the news. I have family in PE and they could not contain their excitement! Granted, having access to mostly only local news this time might skew my view on this.

The traffic was an issue yes. I could not attend much but, when I could traffic was an issue! I guess that is just one of the consequences of wanting your events local and accessible to all. If the night shoot was held further up the West/South coast or where ever I doubt people from all walks of life would have been able to attend. Your economic status might well disqualify you attending (with reference to Khayelitsha close by and so). I personally think a display like the night shoot might just have convinced plenty of kids that the SANDF is a better and "cooler" option than gangs and staying home. And that is a win in my eyes.

Sound wise, Muizenberg could be looked at to appease the owners and their pets. I guess that is just the issue of placement? I mean, where else? Plus if you consider the amount of people leaving with broad smiles on their faces vs those complaining I think the happy ones far, far out number the vocal ones!

Cost wise. Yes, the event might be expensive but we in te Western Cape barely get to see our SANDF. I think plenty of other exercises was probably cancelled to provide ammunition and funding for this. If you combine training with a display you get more value - and in a cash stripped army that is good. Perhaps more events spread out over several years rather than one big week is a better option?

Just my thoughts on things...
Take care!

Some pics I took. What an awesome day!

Everyone around me was having a blast, even the locals, including myself a resident of Parklands.

Can't get over the light. It looks like the aircraft are illuminated from the bottom.

Is that because of the Sun's light reflecting back from the sea and beech?

I'd imagine so. No flares involved!

I enjoyed the whole shebang, and all the days running up to it. The traffic in CT is a bloody nightmare and not good at the best of times due to long sequencing of traffic lights and ridiculous speed limits on double lane roads. Gimme Joeys any day...Blouberg suffers from only two main arterials serving it : Blouberg road and Marine Drive.

Anyway, I think that it is important for the public to be able to see the SANDF in action. We continually moan about how bad it is without really having a good understanding of what's actually going on. I also don't believe that this type of event would be a detriment to the overall SANDF budget. Allowing the soldiers, sailors and aviators to partake in this type of thing must be great for them and can be seen as a form of training / maintaining competency. I spoke to numerous of the parade participants and they said they were enjoying the experience.

So I say, go for it. I love seeing boats, planes and armored vehicles.

Interesting to see that Ratel was by far the most numerous type in the parade by far.

By the way, where was SAS Drakensberg ? I saw a ship looking just like her today in Table Bay.
