Hi Guys

Why don't the Army just sell all the G5 howitzers and just upgrade or buy new G6 howitzers?
The G6 is a better weapon than the G5.
Now they want to waste money and get the T5-52.

Hi Werner, my brother that is in Army HQ said the T5-52 system is cheaper to maintain and run and operate. The G6 components are becoming obsolete. The SAMIL that towed the G5 has the same issues as the G6 fewer spares and costs to run now has also made it unviable to tow the G5 anymore and to support it.

Hi Airfire

Thanks for the info I understand that our G6 is old but Denel further development the G6 to the G6-52 witch is a new weapon system.
In fact it is actively being marketed for export.
Denel also states that all G6 can be upgraded to the new G6-52 standard.
Surely that can be cheaper than buying a hole new weapon system like the T5-52?

It's far simpler than the G6, for example the base vehicle is "any suitable flatbed truck".

The SANDF is in need of a wholesale refresh and rethink of its artillery capabilities, but that won't happen any time soon so various mitigation actions have been performed.

The T5-52s are technically-speaking being given to the SA Army as a replacement for five G5s from SA Army stocks that were sold to the UAE, but as a broader consideration they're being acquired to become the main deployable element of 4 Artillery Regiment's rapid deployment capability. As others have pointed out, the G5s and G6s in service are increasingly difficult to support, but all else being equal it's more likely that JOPS will need a G5/T5-style capability in the next ten years than a fully mechanised G6 capability. That lets them spend much less money keeping the G6s running so as to preserve the capability at a reserve level and put off the acquisition of new systems, or the substantial upgrading of existing systems, for another decade. Even going from the GV6 to G6-52 is going to be expensive.

This means that the SA Army's artillery capability will likely be three T5s as a rapid deployment capability, three G6s in a running-but-reserve status, and the remaining G5s and G6s in a reserve status with a potential need for modifications or other work before they're available.

Hi Darren, you say:

'This means that the SA Army's artillery capability will likely be three T5s as a rapid deployment capability, three G6s in a running-but-reserve status...'

Do you mean the entire SA Army's deployable artillery capability will be three T5's? Three guns, less than half a battery?

That's like having our entire deployable infantry capability being half a company.

I’m referring to the rapid deployment capability, but yes. Three T5s will likely be the best we could muster at short notice.
