While giving his speech to the media about budget problems, the new chief of the army gave out this little tidbit.

Quote:
Responding to a question from the floor, Yam announced that the army had finished its study into the naming of reserve force units and presented its report to the minister of defence. Of the 66 units under review, 40 would have their names changed to reflect South Africa’s indigenous history, celebrating chiefs and liberation heroes.

Absolute sacrilege if you ask me. This, coupled with the secret and underhanded MiG 'gift' makes me seethe with anger.

Typical leftist "rewrite history" strategy. Don't have history of their own? Simple - just make some up.

Seeing how the make up of the units changed it not as crazy as it sounds. Why would a unit full of Zulu want to be named after some English guy.

Tradition. History. Honouring those that have gone before.

To my knowledge no regiment in SA is named after a person. Unlike the names they have proposed to have them changed to.

In addition, some of these units predate even the formation of South Africa, how can you just throw away history like that?

There are a number of units named after Boer war generals, such as Regiment Botha, Regiment De La Rey, Regiment President Steyn, etc.

A preliminary list of the establishment dates of the SA Army, SAAF and SAMHS Reserve Force units can be found at http://www.rfdiv.mil.za/unit_list.html.

I stand corrected. Never heard of those units before.
