Not quite sure where to post this, but here goes.

Anyone think now that we have a new finance minister and government seems likely to loosen the purse strings, there might be more money coming the SANDF's way?

Zuma has made it clear that he wants to play a bit of a strongman role on the continent especially with initiatives like ACIRC, but money was always a problem.

I am a supporter of sound macro economic policies etc. and I do not like what's happening in the country..... I was just wondering.

Or will new VVIP planes and nuclear deals crowd out everyting else?

Agree with Dean. Nuclear programme will bankrupt SA inc. Will be 10 times worse than the Medupi and Kusile debacles.

Regardless of intentions, if there is no money there is no money.

On 702 the other night I heard it put into very simple terms. Poor credit ratings leads to capital starvation. Capital starvation is what brought down all the Soviet states, its also what stopped the former South African regime.

Socialist policies won't help the country, that includes the SANDF.

It might be dressed up in ideology, but what's being planned here is simple looting!

Exactly, no such thing as "radical economic transformation".

Nuclear is not about money. It's about status for those in power and form of "state capture" (to quote the new buzz phrase) for those offering the technology. They sell you stuff they know you can't afford for returns on natural resources or other political favors. This is a long standing policy used by the USA in the past with third world countries. I'm sure the Chinese and Russians subscribe to this concept as well. The government will wake up to this fact 5 years into the project when costs are going north and it's too late. They can't even gauge the impact of firing the finance minister. Rather sad and silly really.

Actually they know all this. How developing countries are fleeced, that is. They've all read John Perkins. They don't care. The potential kickbacks inure them to the deleterious effects of their actions.
Which makes it all about money.

On another note: last time I marched was at the University of Toronto at a protest organised by our very small anti-apartheid movement (I always chuckle how many of my countrymen were involved when they travel here :^o ) and today I marched again. Life's sweet ironies.

Dean: shouldn't this be under general?

Mod: I suppose it is more appropriate under the 'Army and land defence' sub-forum, where the general SANDF conversations are also located. 8)

Oh there is, just it's an entirely negative transformation usually involving dispossessing property lawfully held by people.
