That very first picture looks like a Colonel. Is he not a bit high ranked to be in the field with full battle gear?

Well, I don't know about the current SA army, but what I do know is that in the days of the SADF (yes that one) it was quite common for the Chief of the SADF and / or the ranking General of the SA Army to be seen inside Angola (SA / Angolan 'Bush War'). General Constand Viljoen was known for showing up anywhere anytime.

Things may have somewhat changed, I know I know ....

A battalion commander in SA is usually a Lieutenant Colonel and not a full Colonel. It was kind on tongue in cheek comment. When I was in N/S at Lohatla we did see higher ranked types like staff officers when doing brigade exercises but they were at the bush HQ and not running around in full battle gear. It was usually up to a Captain or Major that would rough it with the troepe.

Key word is usually. All so all the radios, smoke grenade and no weapon makes me think he was not roughing it. All so with the way wars are fought now there are no real fronts.

Very odd to see soldiers in that kit. Has anyone come any closer to figuring out why the non-spec battle jacket was being used?

Gimme an M83 any day.

That other one looks too small.

Could be African Warrior testing? Is that still even a thing?
