SUBJECT: SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL DEFENCE FORCE (SANDF) OPERATIONAL SUCCESSES FOR SEPTEMBER 2014
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) registered one of its best months this year during operations along the borders of South Africa.
The SANDF deployed nearly 2500 soldiers in a border safeguarding role along the landward borders in seven of the nine Provinces
of South Africa. Except for the Western Cape and Gauteng regular as well as Reserve Force members conducted border safeguarding
operations on a twenty four hour basis in all the other provinces.
The main focus of the deployments is on all forms of border violations to and from our neighbouring countries and in most cases the illegal crossing of the borders by not making use of registered ports of entry.
During all these illegal crossing the tendency developed that illegal items are also smuggled into South Africa and it has become standard procedure that all items and especially contraband goods being confiscated.
During the past month of September SANDF members, deployed under Operation Corona, confiscated contraband goods to the value of R5, 250 400.00 million rand in mainly the Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces. The main items being cigarettes, clothing and fake
branded running shoes. A total of 22 271 cartons of illegal cigarettes was confiscated as well as 2 507 pairs of running shoes.
A total amount of 638.7 kilogram of dagga was also confiscated with an estimated street value of R1000.00 per kilogram, totaling almost R638 000.00. A total number of 1414 undocumented persons, not making use of the registered ports of entry were apprehended and handed over to the department of home affairs.
Six stolen vehicle as well as sixty four criminals were arrested and handed over to the South African Police Services (SAPS).
The SANDF will continue to serve the country and execute its mandate in curbing border violations.
