Who would have guessed that smuggling cigarettes was such a big issue.

Smuggling of cigarettes is a HUGE issue, both with tax evasion and counterfeit knock-offs.

Tallyho you don't seem knowledgeable on anything and Roger I thought you would know better.

Seems that certain peeps are focussing on the cigarettes and ignoring the 4000 odd illegal immigrants and firearms that were recovered. All in all, a job well done.

Well actually the illegal immigrants and weapons are just "business as usual", it doesn't surprise anyone.
The scale of the cigarette smuggling is a surprise to me at least, as a non-smoker with no knowlege of tobacco-economics.

I was involved in an investigation a few years ago. Cheap cigarettes imported into SA via Mozambique. The documentation stated that the cargo was to go to Botswana, so no duties were levied. Needless to say, the truck and cargo disappeared before the cargo ever arrived in Botswana!

The cigarettes are then sold on the black market in SA at a huge profit. The brands are not popular at your corner cafe, but you will find them being sold on the pavements stalls, shabeens, etc.
