According to DefenceWeb the long awaited Defence Review has been approved by the cabinet. This is surely good news. What is the next step before it is law? Must it just be rubber stamped by parliament still?

See here: http://www.defenceweb.co.za/index.php?o ... Itemid=242

As I understand the process it next goes to the Portfolio Committee on Defence, who pick over every paragraph and make changes as they see fit - this is the "Green Paper" phase. Then it is submitted to the Assembly for acceptance and only then can it be used as a basis to write policy - the White Paper stage.

BTW - Was it the 10 April 2013 version that was approved by Cabinet? That is the latest version available at http://www.sadefencereview2012.org/publ ... ations.htm

Thanks RtD. :smt023 This is certainly a step in the right direction for our overstretched and underfunded SANDF. It seems like there is still a while to go and it will not be approved by the current sitting of parliament before the general elections in May.

I wouldn't expect the final Parliamentary vote before September at the earliest.
BTW The Review Committee produced a really interesting bunch of Research Essays during their work - http://www.sadefencereview2012.org/rese ... papers.htm

Agreed, don't expect movement before the second half of the year at best. Still, at least one major hurdle has now been cleared. Parliamentary approval is a given, as it will not overrule Cabinet.

I second Roger's suggestion to read those research essays. Read the entire Defence Review too, break it up into a few sittings. It's well worth it.
