Red Arrows jet carrying two crew crashes at RAF Valley air base in North Wales
RAF confirmed they are investigating an incident involving a Hawk aircraft at the North Wales base
A RED Arrows plane has crashed at an RAF base in north Wales, according to reports.
Some reports on social media claimed the two crew members had ejected from the aircraft but their condition is unclear at this stage.
The air ambulance has been scrambled to RAF Valley in Anglesey, North Wales.
Dramatic pictures show a plume of black smoke billowing over the base as horrified witnesses claimed they saw the aircraft burst into flames.
The Welsh Ambulance Service said: "We were called shortly before 1.30pm this afternoon (Tuesday 20 March 2018) to reports an aircraft had crashed at RAF Valley in Holyhead.
"There is an emergency ambulance and a Wales Air Ambulance at the scene."
An RAF spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident today at RAF Valley involving a Hawk aircraft. We are investigating the incident and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage.”
North Wales Police and the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service have also been raced to the base.
A stunned witness claimed they saw crew parachute from the aircraft.
They told the Daily Post: "I was sat at Rhosneigr train station waiting for the train and you can see the air field from there and I was watching the Red arrow flying because you hardly ever see them and then it looked like it was about to land then next thing I saw was the parachute and then the plane hit the runway and went up in flames."
RAF Valley is used to train UK fighter pilots and aircrew for mountain and maritime operations.
Prince William was based there as a search and rescue helicopter pilot.
