Having found a file full of interesting information in our archives and some photographs, as well as one or two stories told to me by my father-in-law I am doing a bit of research on this short-lived and largely mercenary-led unit.

I have quite a bit so far but am looking for further information and images or potential sources - excluding our dear friend Google. I have the book "Mercenary Commander" by Jerry Puren and am looking for a copy - in any condition - of the book "On Wings of War" by Jan Zumbach.

Can anyone out there assist? Thanking you in advance :D

You may also want to read, scrutinize, research the life and times of people like Conor Cruise O'Brien, Colonel Mike Hoare, Jean 'Black Jack' Schramme, Alastair Wicks, Colonel Bob Denard, all being involved in those heady days of the Congo troubles in the 1960's.

Going on memory of books I've read way back, Jeremiah 'Jerry' Puren (a South African) was at some stage in command of the Katangese air force, such as it was. It consisted of two FOUGA MAGISTER jets and a helicopter from which grenades were thrown. The Katangese air force was based at Kolwezi, in the southern Congo, and was wiped out in a strike by United Nations forces (aircraft) at some stage in the early 1960's.

Good luck!

Copies of the book is available on Amazon, hardcover £101 (R2,000) and paperback for £45 (R900).

I've noticed that "Helion Military Books" is coming out with a book titled "Air Wars over Congo" Vol 1. Due out in the spring 2020. Vol 2 obviously later on in the year? May be something your interested in??
Just saying!

I remembered this thread from way back when. I was quite interested in what your findings would be.
I had inquired to Helion Books as to why their book kept getting delayed and their response was "we've decided not to pursue the subject any further".??
A subject not easily researched. Would still love to see what your progress has been.
