Any suggestions for the correct colour to use on the Shackleton ie the grey/blue?

Preferably Tamiya but Humbrol will do - prefer to work with acrylic

On the SAAF Shackleton that I built 2 years ago I used the following Humbrol colours:
Blue - Humbrol 144 Intermediate Blue.
Grey - Humbrol 27 Sea Grey.

I used the Enamels but the grey 27 is available in the Humbrol Acrylic range with the same number, but not the intermediate blue 144 unfortunately.

According to the chart that Dean has put o the link up for these are the following in Tamiya Acrylics:
Humbrol 144 (intermediate blue) is Tamiya XF18 (medium blue)
Humbrol 27 (Sea Grey) is Tamiya XF54 (Dark Sea Grey)

Mine worked out quite well and the pictures are on the following thread: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=3032 about halfway down the page. It has yet to have the decals put on and then matt clear coated.
That is the best I can work out, but maybe someone else has another colour code they used.

Vulcanmx603: Thanks for your feedback on the paint colours & link - nice pics & some good work there. By the way which kit did you use for the Shackleton?

My knowledge of the subject is virtually nothing at this point, my research has just started, I just love the big old prop craft & the different colour scheme on the Shack. I was browsing through pics on the internet but was difficult to establish correct color SAAF scheme, particularly on upper wing surfaces- it would appear some are grey or blueish grey all over but I see yours has the grey upper wing - are there different schemes or its just not clear on the older pics I have seen?

I opened my kit last night & made a start on the cockpit. I did say I would need to step up my skills for this one - it is definitely going to be a challenge to get it up to the Forum's high standard!

Its a Schematic 1/72 from Poland, took 3 months to get here - must say a very novel outfit this! The sprues are all cut up & it arrived with the box bulging at the seams & many loose pieces floating around. The instructions are in Polish & the diagrams are not very clear but I'm sure I'll find my way through????

Thousands of raised rivets & panels(I just hope the seams are going to line up!), plenty flash & sink marks to clean up and very basic interior, no IP. Has anyone done this kit before?

The instructions show the SAAF decals with refernce to RAE Farnborough 1961?

The SAAF decals are a laugh, look like fat goats rather than nimble springboks - (Dean has my order for some Mav replacements, due to arrive by special courier early May)

As I said its going to be a challenge but looking forward to sharing my first build here with you

Here's some pics I took last night, hope this connects, let me know if not

The following is an extract from “A portrait of Military Aviation in Southern Africa" by Ron Belling:

Quote:
Avro Shackletons
When delivered, the Shackletons had BS gloss Extra Dark Sea Grey (BSC640) upper surfaces and gloss Photo Reconnaissance Unit Blue (BSC636) undersides, fuselage flanks and vertical tail surfaces as well as a Yellow aircraft letter forward of the fuselage insignia. A fairly large Black serial number on the rear fuselage was repeated on the undersides. Although delivered in springbok roundels, these very soon gave way to Castle insignia. Fin flashes were painted on outer vertical surfaces and the wing walkway lines were Yellow.

It was found necessary to apply matt Black anti-glare panels to the fuselage forward of the cockpit and White fuselage decking. Because the White lined up with the tailplane centreline, a strip of the original Extra Dark Sea Grey initially separated the White from the PRU Blue. This was later eliminated when the aircraft underwent repainting. During the 1970s the front sections of the spinners were painted post office red (BSC538). Serial numbers were in black, with the last two digits repeated on the nose between the machine guns. Code letter was in yellow. The retractable radome under the aft fuselage was light grey.

NeedBeer,

I've done a couple of kits of the Shackleton over the years and still have Frog,Novo,Model.....( name I forget, but can go and look in the storeroom).

The kits are all come from the same mould that was made by Frog long ago.

You have a choice of 3 colour schemes for the Shack.

Extra Dark Sea Grey / PRU Blue with Springbok roundels, although only a few aircraft had this scheme.

Extra Dark Sea Grey / PRU Blue with Springbok Castles.

Extra Dark Sea Grey / PRU Blue / White roof with Springbok Castles.

The Humbrol colours are Extra Dark Sea Grey - H 123

PRU Blue - H 230

The Shacks that are on display at Zwartkops and Ysterplaat have a weathered effect on the aircraft as they are exposed to the elements.

If you need any help, please let me know.

Geoff

Would those Humbrol numbers also work for the Albat? What are the FS numbers for these colours?

Piaggio P-166S Albatross

The Albatross is finished with Dark Sea Grey (BSC638) wing and tailplane upper surfaces, including the engine nacelles and tops of the tanks, and PRU Blue (BSC636) undersides. The fuselage decking and vertical surfaces are gloss White, separated by a thin BS Aircraft Blue stripe. The inner sides of the wingtip tanks, and the anti-glare panel, are matt Black, while the nose radome is semi-matt Black. The fuselage serial number as originally worn were removed, and the last two numerals are repeated in Black on the top of the fin. The full serial number is worn on the undersides. Red fuselage and wing propeller warning stripes are prominent, as are the Day-Glo long-range tank finlets. The 27 Squadron badge is positioned on the nose aft of the radome.

I see Dean classified the SAAF aircraft under three main categories under the gallery-and-media selection namely SAAF Fighters, SAAF helicopters and SAAF transport. There the Harvard is classified under transport. In light of this it means that I can continue with my previous group build, extending the time with 2 and a half months, as my Harvard of the 1st GB also fall under SAAF transport…

PRU Blue - FS 35189 = Humbrol 230 = Vallejo 157 = BSC636
Extra Dark Sea Grey - FS 36118 = Humbrol 125 = Vallejo 163 = BSC640
This is according to the Ultimate Paint Chart.

I will be using Vallejo acrylics on my Albat.

Now, does anybody have pics of the interior of the Albat, especially the rear. There are some decent pics available for the console and I took some pics of the pilot seats in December at Swartkops. So please anybody, I would really appreciate any pics. [-o< [-o< [-o<
