Enough of this 32nd scale nonsense. Time for a real model.... 8)

This is the Airfix 24th scale DH Mozzie - great artwork as we have come to expect from Airfix. I bought this model a good 7 or so years ago. It's been sitting on the shelf daring me to start. Very daunting prospect given the size and number of components - two full engines etc. :

Here's the instruction sheet given scale by the 48th Spittie box - it's actually a bit of a problem. Where does one put the instructions on the model bench without bumping over paint bottles ? :

Full to the brim with lots of sprues of soft baby blue-grey Airfix plastic :

And then just in case, some nice add-ons : resin wheels to replace the rubber kit parts, seat belts, and those stunningly amazing spark eroded 0.303 and 20mm gun barrels care of Master. Even the recoil diaper springs for the 20mm canon are provided.

Cockpit bits and pieces. Sufficient detail. Oddly enough lots of badly located recessed ejector punch marks which I've covered with plastic card. Some ejector marks stand proud of the surface so I drilled 8 small holes around the circumference to simulate removable panels, the holes meant to be the fasteners. Not exactly accurate but I was not going to spend hours trying to remove these :

Primer interior green painted using a mix of 50% XF-71 green / 50% X-2 white :

Size comparison with 48th scale Spittie. Top wing is Mozzie horizontal stab - larger than Spittie wing. So you get the idea - this is a biiiiig kit.

Trust you built a display cabinet before opening the box!

That is the reason my 1/24 Tiffy is safely in the box stil and building lately is so slow :(
Go to Mayzi plastics, they do make display stands and cases I think but be prepared to pay a few grand for one, but looking at the value of the models inside it is worth it.

It may be more practical to make your own at the end of the day.

True, but I'm no good at woodwork :? Maybe I'll go for Theuns's idea. I'm looking for a lightweight modular sort of cabinet.

Not sure if Mayzies has them but here in Selby there is a plastic place called Plastic land. They make up costom units, or has plastic clear "boxes" that can be stacked made form perspex. You could sub devide them internally to take a few models and build up a case as you go allong, that way it will not be so costly at one time to eat into your "model after market bling" budget

Mine is still in it's box. Actually too scared to start it, besides I want to get an artbrush etc first.

C'mon Drifter - I'll give you two days to catch up !! 8)

Anyway, here are all the bits of the cockpit assembled and painted :

Very nice kit IP :

But it gets better - I was planning on using some Airscale instrument decals but then I opened the clear parts bag and out came the following each nicely protected with some sponge paper :

Kit seat with Eduard photoetch harnesses - with hindsight, I don't like these harnesses. I prefer the earlier type with the holes :

ImageIMG_5633 - 800 by Malcolm Reid, on Flickr

Cockpit floor with navigator's seat. Weathering done with a combination of pastels, Tamiya enamel black wash flicked on with a stiff brush and scratches using an HB pencil :

Left hand cockpit wall - detail seems to be a bit simplistic but once everything is in place and the fuselage halves put together it all looks nice and busy. The only really obvious thing missing is the oxygen hose :

IP and side console with those natty little clear instrument bits in place. Data labels are a combination of kit and Airscale decals :

Bits in place :

Next up - One RR Merlin, the greatest piston engine ever !! I'll leave one open and the other cowling closed. Can't see myself assembling two whole engines.

You first need to make a start on yours....

This will most probably be my first and last 24th scale kit - they're just too big. 48th is still the best - enough detail but doesn't take up too much cupboard space.
