Yesterday I was asked to build a 1/32 Tam Spitty Mk8 for a friend.
Need;ess to say I was interested to see how well it builds after my recemt experience with the Tam Mustprang.
I woke at 0600 to pouring rain and with all my plans shot to hell I started this kit expecting another longterm build.
However I was surprised how quick it is going sofar.
Here is the basic components of the cockpit sofar.

Painted in Humbrol RAF interior...

The parts take very little if any cleanup compared to the damn revell 1/32 Spit Mk2 I am busy with.


It will be in the colours of the USAAF in Italy 1944.

Malcom I am extremely impressed with this Yam kit. comared to the revell one, The tamiya just falls together with thin cement.

I already have the fuselage joined, wing is basically done and all tails and controll surfaces joined. If I think how long I took on the mustprang this spitty is moving at light speed

All detail is out the box except for the copper hydrolic libed to the right side controller aswell as the throttle quadrant's control pudhrods.

On my mustang I preshaded the sidepannels but the effect made for a to dark look so this time I just did a pinwash to give some depth.

Looking good Theuns. IMHO you cant really compare Revell and Tamiya. It would have to be a very special kit for me to spend money on a Revell again. The 1/48 Revell Mosquito I just finish was the dogs breakfast. Currently building a Trump Mig 15 Bis, and so far it is very good, with just a few small issues. So in future I will buy Trumpeter, Tamiya kit's are just a bit of a stretch for the budget.

Drifter don't take Revell off your shopping list. The Mossie you built is most probably a 40 year old kit which explains why it was a nasty build. Revell have made some really nice kits recently. Some of their 72nd kits like the He177 and C-160 are fantastic. Their 32nd Hunter is beautiful and their latest 32nd FW190F8 and Bf109 series come really well recommended. Before buying a Revell kit, do some research and take a look in the box. If it has raised panel lines, politely place it back on the shelf. Apart from that no other manufacturer comes close to Revell in terms of cost. Their good kits are cheap for what you get.

Indeed, the 110 I did was revell, I have a 1/32 PA-18 and the 1/32 HE162 and both look very nice in the ox, flash free with nice detail.
The Revell spitty can not compare to the tamiya, that us true as the tamiya costs around R1800-00 for a fantastic kit with superb fit. The detail on the revell is not all that bad, quite good actually but the fit is poor. For a modern kit if 2014 I would have expected more and at R600-00 is not all that cheap either.
I have built a few Trumpeter models and for the same R600-00 I got the 1/32 MiG 21 f13 wich I understand builds up to a very nice model.
That is the reason that I am not impressed with the revell spitty. The cost does not reflect what the quality of the model is

Here is the wingroot fit on the Tam spitty, a light sanding and it will be ready for paint. Only thin cement was needed, no filler.

The engine took about 90 min to assemble ready for paint.

Good progress for only 3 days work

In the meantime I painted all the bits for the engine mounds and firewall.

These radiators really "look the part" with a bit of a pinwash

The rest of the engine assembly was a tad fiddly, (was the same on my P-51) but it looks nice.

Coming along nicely

This is not the best quality pic but you can see the preshading (my hand was a tad shaky it seems lol)

I mixed sonme Tamiya blue with white and added a few drops of red to give it that Azure look that has a very slight "violett" tint. Difficult to see in the cell pic.

Next will be my mix of faded Mid stone and dark earth

I decided to preshade the top aswell, I usually do not but the nice rivet detail and shading might be enough to not need a pin wash.
I also usually do a light base colour all over then mask and do the darker colour but in this case I think it would hide the pre shading.

I am not going to do a pinwash on the upper surface, the detail it showing up well enough.
