Am I going to be starting to build a 1/72 model of the SAAF C-160Z Transall in its original White/Silver scheme. I am therefore asking if anyone has colour photos of the cockpit colour scheme as well as the hold interior/ fold down seats & stretchers.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
The one I am doing is the odd one of the fleet No 338. It carries the English and Afrikaans titles on the opposite sides of the fuselage when compared to photo of the other C-160Z's of the SAAF fleet.

Also I am led to believe that the holds front loading door (behind the crew entry door) was welded shut and never opened. Can anyone confirm this.

Untrue,it can open and was used in service.

I will have a look at my photo's and see if I have anything regarding the cockpit.
I think that I might have taken a few photo's last year when 337 was re-sprayed.

The first 3 Transall's that were delivered had the port fin flash reversed, same as the French with the blue leading.

I'm not sure to what you are referring to regarding "opposite sides of the hull", port/starboard?

Hope these will suffice until AT6C provides better ones.

When I was a loady back in '90 the front door was NOT closed. It is just that 90% of the time we used the ramp.

Reference opposite sides of the fuselage: Here are photos of different serial numbered Transalls. On 331, 333 & 339 the SA Air Force title is on the Port side of the Fuselage and SA Lugmag on the Starboard side. On 338 SA Lugmag title is on the Port side and SA Air Force on the Starboard side

A SAAF practice in the past was to "title" the aircraft in the then two official languages, odd numbers would have had English on the port side with Afrikaans on the starboard side, even numbers would have the Afrikaans on the port side and English on the starboard side.

Interesting, the Harvard's were also so titled regarding the stencilling.

Many thanks for these AT6C. Just one query. Was the co pilots seat removed for display as per in this photo of yours or was it removed in operational aircraft??

Also many thanks re the titles and numbering explanation.
Now might do one of the first three aircraft with the tail marking reversed as per delivery. Something different.

A well known photo of Transall 331.

Pilot in command's seat was removed for a minor repair when I took this photo, co-pilot sit on the starboard side in aircraft and sits on the port side in helicopters.

Flight engineer seat behind the two pilot's seat, can be seen to the right of the photo, at the rear of the deck is the navigator's station and above that station is the emergency exit.

Hope that this helps you.

To all who have assisted - many thanks. Will try to do as much detail as possible with the 1/72 kit build.

I recall when we were doing test flights in a C-160 from Waterkloof, the side door hydraulic actuators had been disconnected as a SAAF mod due to damage when the actuators were inadvertently actuated with the door locked in the closed position. This resulted in structural damage. Use of the rear ramp was deemed sufficient. Don't know if that was temporary. I'm talking around 1988.
