I want a "simple" build after the JU 88 and hope this will be it.
Iataelri F1 CT/RC with all the resin bits to make it into a late war SAAF AZ.

My question is - will the kit MER be OK for SAAF on the inboard pylons? Is the kit centre line tank correct?

What do I cut off the pannel to make it an AZ? Is it only the radar scope sheild ??

Hi T
The CL Tank is good
I do not recall ever seeing the dual MER on the F1AZ.

The IP is totally wrong for the AZ but screw it, I will cheat it into an AZ

Take the radar scope off and replace with centrally mounted moving map display (round). The centerline tank is good (1,700 lt). SAAF did not use dual bomb MERs on wings as per kit supplied parts. The later MER on the AZ was a four bomb setup which was not used operationally. If you want a Border load out use the following :
1) 4 bomb centerline MER with 4 X 500lb or 4x 750 lb, 1,300 lt wing tanks and wingtip V3Cs.
2) 4 bomb centerline MER with 4 X 500lb or 4 X 750 lb dumb bombs plus two each on outboard wing pylons and (assuming) 1,300 lt tanks inboard, V3C wingtips. I'm not sure they could carry the wing tanks with the 6 X 750 lb load - if not range would have been severely limited.
3) centerline tank (1,300, not 1,700 lt) and 4 X 500 lb or 750 lb bombs, one on each wing station. V3C wingtips
4) as for 3 above with 4 X rocket pods on wing pylons

On the centerline MER with the 750 lb bombs, note the fin orientation on the front two bombs are at 45 degrees to clear the MER whilst the back two seem to be at 90 degrees as they hang off the back of the MER

Some nice pics on Internet of these load outs.

Check my AZ build on ARC for some additional goodies to look at....

I recall your build Malcom. What paints did you use?
OK, do the radar scope comes off, what happens to the area of the scope ontop of the IP(in red) is it also hollow likr the LH side??
ImageIMG_20180529_061729 by Theunis van Vuuren, on Flickr

What is the square on the centre top of IP just to the left of the scope? is this the moving mad same as AZ?
ImageIMG_20180529_061630 by Theunis van Vuuren, on Flickr
Are the supplied pylons OK for SAAF?

I think a CL tank with bomb per pylon looks about right to me. I will have to mod the supplied missles to V-3 aswell.

.
Take the whole scope off. The square is the control panel for the HUD. The moving map display is slap bang in the middle of the IP. Pylons are good to go. V3 longer than Matra 550 with different diameter and different size rear fins and different arrangement / configuration of front fins / canards.

I will cut off the whole part of the scope that sticks past the IP, that i get, di I then also remove the forward part of the scope that sits ontop and to the right of the high part of the glare shield? If so must it be hollowed out to look like the left side of the glare shield with wires and "stuff" that run there aswell?

I see also the overall shape if the IP on the AZ is more square than the one I have, I will not try to rectify this, I will cheat....but tell no-one
Is the map display the one square behind the collomb?

I think black will make it all to dark, I will have to play arround with dark grey a bit.

Hi T
Very black yes, have you used Tyre or NATO Black? The AZ cockpit was really black and dark.
Moving Map below and behind Joystick yes

Theuns I used a resin copy of the Hasegawa A-4 IP  . I wasn't prepared to scratch build an IP in 48th.

Use dark grey with a black wash and light grey drybrushing for highlights.

Ah screw it , I am painting it pink!
Indeed dark grey with a black pin wash, light drybrishin and a few random "coloured bits" otherwize the very nice detail could be lost in the "cave"

I cut off the scope with a razor saw now I need to hollow out that section below the glare shiels to add the instruments...that will be fun!

I used rubber black instead of straight black, I find it a little less "harsh"

Here is the tub sofar. I am pleased with the level of "black" , it is not overly dark and most of the detail is still nicely visable.
I drybrushed the highlights with gull greay instead of white, I think it looks cool.
The switch pannels were highilghted with white.

For the exhaust I used burnt iron and the pettals were made to look "metal" with a graphite pencil.
On the inside I used tamiya smoke to make it look a little more "sooty"

The seat still needs some buckles and a pinwash.
