Here's my next SAAF build :

Base kit is the Kinetic IIID2Z - a really nice kit :

ScaleWorx BZ conversion set

There were only 3 BZs delivered, two of which are at Swartkop. I'll be doing the delivery scheme of natural metal with red GT stripes and red vertical stabiliser.

Here are the ScaleWork resin parts :

Neatly packed in separate bags :

The parts are well cast with no bubbles. The seats particularly are really well detailed. The IPs have been modified by John to be representative of the BZ IPs.

The nose and tail pipe diameters match the kit accurately :

But before we get to the resin, some modifications are required to the bottom wing section :
- All the intakes and vents must be hollowed out - 30 minutes with a drill and sharp knife
- Quite a bit of removal of plastic from the mating surface to eliminate a nasty step on the wing underside - 20 minutes work

Before the hollowing out of vents :

Hollowed out vents - much better :

The vents adjacent to the gum barrels must be removed as the BZ did not have these. These came in with the D, E and R models :

Wheel bays painted chrome yellow and green. Little wing data plates care of Airscale decals :

Nose U/C bay - really fine detail OOB

ImageIMG_0739 - 800 by Malcolm Reid, on Flickr

Loose wing to fuselage fit - really neat :

Resin rear ventral bay cover - required as the BZ had the simple 2D blade ventral fin unlike the kit parts which have the wider 3D fin for the later D, E and R. Fit is great. You can also see the gap between upper and lower wing surface filled with Perfect Plastic putty :

Time to sort out the tail cone :

Cutting off kit parts with razor saw :

Compare the two halves - one has the rear removed, the other not :

Time for the cockpit - fits well but no detail on the side walls - added some bits and pieces from thin plastic card to add some detail and cover some mould punch marks. The white floors from plastic card as I had to cut out the base kit seat stands which left holes in the floor as they were too high for the resin seats :

All painted up - black base with Tamiya NATO black over spray to tone black down a bit. Dry brushed with XF-20 medium grey. Details picked out with sharpened toothpick and Revell acrylic paints. Mirage cockpits were rather bland with very few colour details - I took a bit of artistic licence to add some colour again to add interest :

This is 817, 'Skydancer' (SA flag colour scheme). Last I heard, it was at AFB Hoedspruit,
