There is an Android app that can be downloaded for quick color reference and conversion: Hobby Color Convertor

The app can do model scaling as well.

Don't know if this app is available for other cellphone OS's

Windows Phone has Humbrol Paint Converter:

Quote:
A handy paint conversion chart for kit modelers. Displays conversions between Humbrol and Revell paints and correspondence of Humbrol to US Federal Standard colors.

Allows searching by name or by code and filtering of the model paints.

Hallo julle!

I'm doing my Bucc in the 'delivery' scheme:
Image

Questions are:

- Is it a gloss or matt paint job on the real thing? This model has been done gloss, but I'm not sure this is correct?

- I've found Humbrol PRU Blue 230 and Extra Dark Sea Grey 123 as main colours, are these correct?

Cheers!

The suggested SAAF colours with photos is a great help.
Regarding the underside of the Mirage III; I used the Humbrol suggested colour for their F1CZ Hu 129 US Gull Grey underside, toned down 63 Sand with some 93 Desert Yellow and a mix of 163 Satin Dark Green and 30 Matt Dark Green which I am happy with for the topsides.
Regarding the F1BZ in Earth, Dark Green and Azure; what is this colour scheme called please? I used 84 Mid Stone, 30 Dark Green for the topsides and toned down 157 Azure Blue with 134 Matt White for the underside and tail fin.
I am busy refinishing my Italeri 1/72 SAAF Gripen C and not knowing any better I finished it in the same scheme as the air to air Cheetah C scheme with FS 3675/Hu 127 all over and FS 36320/Hu 128, darkened slightly with a few drops of Hu125, for the diamond. I still have to apply decals. Is this correct?
I have found big variations in tins of Hu 128 with my two previous tins being slightly green after application and the first one used on an F/A 22 model actually turned light green with age! I was doing the Gripen D the same colours but now thanks to this article I can use Hu 127 only for the radome, my Hu 128 mix for the rest and Hu 125 for the diamond in the same manner as my Cheetah C no 377 ground optimized model.
Lastly regarding the weapons fit for these Gripens; what would they normally carry in SAAF service? I am planning to fit Sidewinders, supplied in the kits, to the wing tips but the four under wing hardpoints have me stumped. Any suggestions? The Italeri kits supply US and unknown, large, air to ground missiles with the C model and what look like AMRAAMS with the D model.

Hi Louis I'm no expert when it comes to saaf colours but when I recently did my Silver Falcon I used Tamiya XF16 for the overall aluminium colour and then for the highlights used Tamiya X4 - blue, Tamiya X2 - white, and Humbrol H18 - orange. I gloss coated with Tamiya x22 and I think it looks OK.

Hey all,

I'm not sure if you get Vallejo acrylic colors in SA, but for those who can't find humbrol 230 Pru Blue or don't want to use oils, I found some sort of equivalent..actually 2, namely:

Vallejo 70.899 Azul Prusia which is the darker of the 2

Vallejo 70.965 Azul De Prusia lighter

Obviously, use white for scale.

Haven't been able to find an equivalent in Tamiya or Hobbycolor..

Just thought I'd share..

best to all

Hi there

Any help perhaps on the colour codes for the Oryx?
Thanks

Author:  Dean [ 28 Feb 2018, 17:37 ]
Post subject:  Re: SAAF Humbrol colours

The Oryx has had several different colour schemes over the years.

But the following may give a good approximation:
- 29 Dark Earth (FS 33531)
- 30 Dark Green
- 121 Israeli Pale Stone (FS 33531)

Hi, Are the colours suggested for the Gripen the same as those for the Hawk trainer?
