Just wondering if any Daks are still in SAAF service? (It raises the question: which is the oldest military aircraft, by tail number / serial number still flying in the world?)

Officially, yes, the C-47TP TurboDak (upgraded DC-3 with turbine engines) is still operational with 35 Sqn in the transport and maritime patrol roles.

However, serviceability has been poor in the last few years, coupled with groundings for various technical reasons, low budget, etc. However, one or two airframes are currently serviceable.

One Dakota 6832 is at the museum Ysterplaat in a static condition, while the other Dakota 6859 is at Swartkop.

Dakota 6859 needs some maintenance, replacing the wing attachment bolts and nuts amongst other work required.

Money and labour is required to get her going again, there is not enough labour at present besides the money.

Good news is that TP Daks are flying again Saw one last night and tonight around 18h30!landing at Ysters. Couldn't see tail number.
