With all the complaining about the flying program, the heat, dust, wind etc. etc I wish they'd move AAD down to Cape Town permanently. These Gautengers don't know what they've got. Multiple airshows every year at various locations.

Give AAD back to cape Town!

I saw the program - I heard the rumour about 9 Gripens in the air - there is a formation of 8 Gripens with a Hawk - on Sunday evening at 5:00 - after I left to catch my fliight back to Cape Town. i am desperately trying in Social media to get the organisers to change it, for the following reasons:

1. We still have too many people believing we only have 6 Gripen pilots after an article YEARS ago, and leaving this formation until late, will let a small part of the crowd see it, as the majority leaves after the MiniWar and the Silver Falcons - which ends at 3:00.

2. What a better way to demonstrate to the public that we have quite a few jets still flying, especially with such a big formation.

3. It will be a massive advertisement for SAAF recruitment, on top of all the other flying done on the day.

It's absolutely tragic that it is left for so late in the day, after the majority of peole left. The regular AAD'ers will know exactly what I'm talking about...

We'll at least appreciate it, as it will be our ONLY airshow - although only every second year.

Fair point, Cape Town is a great venue however AAD is an industry show, the argument for having AAD at Waterkloof is that the majority of industry representation is in Gauteng.

The catch though is to still get industry to participate in AAD, which I think is starting to prove a challenge.

Cape Town is also suitable for naval/maritime exhibitors - Waterkloof doesn't even have a duck pond!

Was that aspect ever fully exploited when AAD was in Cape Town?

I know the Navy would dock a corvette at the waterfront, but other than that?

Waterkloof actually does have a duck pond, its called Rietvlei Dam. Unfortunately I don't think the locals would appreciate it if was commandeered for AAD.

rynopot if the Marketing Dept of the SAAF (and for that matter the SANDF) had to be a self-sustaining business entity, they would not make tea time on the first day of business. Sad ........ but true

Spoke to the Gripen guys, max 6 due to personnel, serviceability

5 at Kloof already.

AAD at Ysterplaat was nice, runway is the major problem and ramp space.

I spoke to one of the ground crew at Langebaan last year and he said they aim to keep between 9 and 12 pilots close by. Could easily mean that there could be less pilots at any one time, but others are close by who only need a quick refresher to be classified as current again.

And I agree with Ryno! Those Gautengers complain about the line up and we down in the Cape get nothing! Even the economy is against us flying up to see the show! Guess we will have to start saving for 2020 when the SAAF turns 100. Hopefully they celebrate in style! ( On the 100 note, how would a Gripen painted Spotty style but as a griffon rather than a cheetah look? 8) )

The LC-130H serial 73-3300 one of only 3 still left, was told by the crew load master it only has 20 hours left on the airframe,it will be retired soon after the airshow and mothballed in the desert, its a 1973 model and has flown to Greenland and Antarctica many times, the engines also have been upgraded to NP2000 8 blades as a test and will be removed, this aircraft has more thrust than any other C-130 including the C-130J.
