Should rather read Mig swooped down on SAAF.
As far as I know it came in under the radar untill it was over the airfield.

I thought he was intercepted before he was too deep into the country?

This was a planned defection as well as a pre-planned 'intercept' (i.e. escort) from Mozambique to Hoedspruit.

Though the plan went wrong when Lt. Bomba came in Mig number 21 instead of a MiG-21, which was what the SAAF intel guys really wanted.
