In my opinion airshows get slotted into two categories ... good ones and bad ones. This was a GOOD one !!! =D> \:D/ :D :smt023

Aircraft were much closer to the flight-line than before & the displays were superb!!

But joh joh joh, the wind was HECTIC & made tracking the aircraft tricky ... I've got plenty shots with blue skies & 1/2 aircraft. Some missing wings, tails, noses ... it was like sitting at a tennis match & attempting to follow the tennis ball through the 400mm lens

Yup, that wind was something else .. gusting to over 40 kts ... even the C-130 was drifting sidewards when flying towards us.

As Rosh said, kudos to all the pilots some some exceptional flying skills and station keeping during the aerobatic maneuvers, you would be hard pressed to see how bumpy it was up there. Strong winds and dry grass meant no flares and even the WoF demo was cancelled.

Still, a most enjoyable day and many thanks to AFB Langebaanweg and the organisers for a fantastic day for us airshow starved Capetoneans.

Rosh, nice meeting you and I'll post some pics as soon as I get all that dust out of mouth, nostrils and cameras!

I had lengthy conversations with both Gripen pilot - two young chaps. Major Cooper, who did the Gripen display and Major Venter who performed the supersonic boom.

Share some of the insight you gained? The Gripen ground crew at the static were also very friendly. I enjoyed chatting to them on servicing the Gripen and some other squadron activities.

Further, I agree with all those who posted previously. A thoroughly enjoyable day with lots of action. Those who braved out the wind were certainly well rewarded - even if there were no flares! If it were not for the seven's, attendance would have been much higher in my opinion. The family had a few complaints about the food stalls and so on but I did not even notice as I was on the flight line the whole day anyway! Great to see those aerries so close! =D>

A very special thanks to AFB Langebaanweg for hosting such an epic event! Hope to have a quite few more in the future!

What a stunning show. Pity about the wind. But I still enjoyed it. Stayed till the very end. :smt023

@Airfire
Flares were banned due to the drought. And here's some video clips for you.

Gripen was flying high for the sonic boom, could not see much and it was quite windy, so the boom was muted.

All I could see:

No flares due to the VERY strong wind and dry grass.

However, the Gripen did a very nice fuel dump!

I have some bad news buddy. Talked to Kaine before he flew the sound barrier flight: explained how it works, and said the following: Gripen is very aerodynamic and for a loud bang, we actually need a big ugly jet.

Furthermore he had to do it at 30 000 feet, because in 2008 the SAAF had a LOT of claims for broken windows. And the wind was pumping at 45 - 60 km/h. So the boom was so soft, that I didn't bother making a video for Social media. I'll look at my times available and see what I can do. I can always edit in the 2008 English electric lightning bang... If no one objects, I'll edit it in - my fiancé tells me she can hear it (played it for her).
The commentator even asked Kaine if he can turn up the volume a bit.

Part of my discussion with Major Venter (Gripen pilot), was about this topic.
He in fact says that all flares at air shows are currently suspended due to a recent incident.
Flares were released but one penetrated a stationary aircraft's cockpit and caused a fire...so it's suspended until the investigation is completed.

Whereas this may not have been the biggest air show I've experienced, it was a very good one. Especially taking into consideration the budget constraints and extremely adverse weather conditions.

This was by far the best Gripen display that I've seen! My goodness, Major Cooper entertained the crowd. Especially after doing an inverted "pull up" and lighting up the "leaked" fuel with the after burners! =D>

The Hawk display was pretty good too. The last fly pass of the Hawk and Gripen was awesome - low and fast! =D>
I think that was to say thank you to the faithful 'crowd' who weren't being deterred by the wind!

Personally, I thought the Rooivalk display wasn't the best that I've seen. Wind could have been a factor though?
The A109 display on the other hand, was very impressive. I've seen a few displays of the aircraft, but Saturday's display was better than that of the Rooivalk =D>
