The SAAF paid a heavy price in using their Mustang and Spitfires in the ground attack role.

These two aircraft were very vunerable due to their radiators and cooling system, one hit even from a 7.92mm in the cooling system ruined many a pilots day.

The normal light flak thrown at them was from 20mm cannons mounted in the form of the three (belt fed) and four (magazine fed) barrel mountings.

Have just been outside watching a Spitfire and a Hurricane doing a display for the Gedling show, ahh....... the sound of those Merlin engines is just music to the ears.
