Hi Everyone

A buddy of mine says the SAAF used to run "Vlossie" flights from Waterkloof to Walvis Bay, and that members of the public could fly along.

He can't remember much about it so I thought I'd find out if anyone here knows about it, how it worked and if its still in existence?

Thanks!

Hi nitric

Welcome to the SAAF forum.

The SAAF no longer flies any schedules flight to Walvis Bay as Walvis Bay is no longer South African as it was handed over to Namibia quite a few years ago.

The 'Vlossie' was a generic term for the regular shuttle flights from the border (SWA) to South Africa and between the various airforce bases in South Africa. As they were mostly flown by Hercules aircraft, they were long, loud, dark and very uncomfortable.

General members of the public were most certainly not allowed and civilians had to obtain permission from the military to fly on the Vlossie (they would have to be on military business or be involved with the military in some way).
