Thanx KnightOne - no one is asking the obvious question (on my mind): Who is the Best?

Any results from the A2A Combat?

Jacques Mouton is one of them. He's been in front of media too.. using the word awesome alot :) (about Gripen and flying)

Who's the best? Beating pilots from the Czech Tiger and SwAF OT&E units might be a bit of a challenge because they fly plenty and really develop on tactics. Then the SAAF jets might have the better RWR/ESM.

Edit - Extra info: Temperature dropped but looks like good flying weather next couple of days. The king will be visiting on monday so might get some media there. And less known is that both the Switzerland and Brazil air forces attend Lion Effort as observers. So the Brazilians can in one place chat to 6 air forces that have selected Gripen..

Since there's no trophy to win you're unlikely to hear any results.

The SAAF team is the smallest there, so don't expect them to take all the glory! Did the SAAF send a full MOAT to Sweden?

South African visit to I-Hawk battery (customized version "Robot 97") That air defense unit reports that so far Swedish pilots are very good but they also noticed very high skill levels amongst foreign participants. Only familiarisation phase so far.

On Saabs site they mention Lion Effort 2018 might be in South Africa :) Wouldnt bet on too many foreign aircraft other than Swedes if that's the case but could still be a good event.

This type of exercise has nothing to do with trophies. It has to do with comparing tactics and experiences with equipment.

Np sharing is caring 8)

Here's something related I just noticed; SAAF Gripen listed on both flying and static displays during Aerospaceforum 2012 (and SwAF main flying event) open day 3 June. So looks like there's no rush with the final delivery.

Jeapers, mooi bly maar mooi (pretty stays pretty)

Wish I could get some video in there! That D still rattles my bones PROPERLY. The longer canopy makes for sexier lines - I think

I try to post SAAF related stuff otherwise not already up on Saabs web...

South Africans also learn and participate in air combat control at F 21 CRC Eagle located >1000 km from the exercise area. LE 12 use NATO-procedures.

In a field tent, SAAF presented itself and outlined its LE 12 role for the visiting Swedish king (2nd left) and SwAF air chief commander (right)

Image

The base doesn't have heated hangars for all aircraft so last night as temperature unexpectadly dropped below 0c some service panels froze shut but it was quickly resolved with some deicing liquid and heaters.

Happy to report that the SAAF were tasked with the role as Mission Commander during Tuesday and performed very well. As the MC you get a tool-kit of allied aircraft and then it's up to him to plan, coordinate and command these assets so the mission will be executed successfully.
