Seconded Cobalt's request. Photobucket's change is really frustrating for forums like ours.

To add something new to this old thread, another project in this space was Katoog, a CSIR programme to adapt the same helmet tracking technology for use in helicopters.

A very early version, really not much more than a post-mounted gun sight linked to four side-firing .303 guns on hydraulic servos in an Alouette III, was tested in then-Rhodesia from 1978 onward. First in a six-week trial and then as a standard system referred to as the 'Dalmation Fit' and 'K-Car Alpha'. At that stage there were some issues with the helmet portion of the system, hence the need to mount the gun sight on a post.

Katoog was later used on the XH-1 Alpha, XTP-1 Beta, and Rooivalk XDM prototypes if I recall correctly. However Denel opted for the Thales TopOwl system in the production Rooivalk.

Great reference!

Rather impressive that the basic concept remains unchanged forty years later, albeit massively improved and refined. Testament to an excellent original design.
