I also have a SAAF pilots log books for 24 Squadron. The chap served from El Alamein to Sicily and then went to 5 Wing flying Dakota on the shuttle from SA to Rome.

Has loads of aircraft serial numbers and information in it. Especially concerning the C-47s. He flew around 40 of them and alot of them being the significant ones ie the first one the SAAF obtained. Which they stupidly gave to Rhodesia where it was written off in the early 1980's as a Zimbabian Air Force machine.

He took part in a number of raids as mentioned in the SAAF at War, one of which there is a photo of some 24 Sqn aircraft bombing the Italian Island of Patelleria in the SAAF at War it is in his log book.

Could also be used to track down the grave of one of the air crew who was killed in action down. As it mentions where they buried him and he is listed on a memorial and not with a personal grave.

New on this forum. Looking for advice on how to get any info on my father, killed WW11. Name Sale, G.E. Lt. Killed 20/03/43 flying Boston a/c. I received a letter from crew member Sgt H. Maine, who was shot down at the same time but survived. He gave me an interesting description of what happened and a photo of the crew. Another survivor was Sgt Ron Stuckey, RAF. The observer McCartney, R.L. Lt. did not survive.
I do have a book on the history of the 24th squadron but any further help would be much appreciated.
Thanks, J. Sale.

Exceptional!!!

I will have to try and scan or photograph my grandfather's log book now.

It has the written proof of his B-24 conversion with 34 sqn (I think)... and subsequent transfer to a Spitfire sqn. Only in war.

It also has a handful of pictures of various SAAF aircraft...

Hi Mr sale.
As his son you are allowed to draw his personel file at the SANDF Doc Centre in Visagie Str, Pta.
You can phone Steve de Agrelo at 012 339 4600.
The 24 sqdn War Diary is also available. Suggest you take your digital camera and go and photograph the 24 sqdn War Diary for the time that he was there.
Will you post the operational pages of his logbooks??
Hope it helps

Thank you for your quick reply! It might be a bit of a trip to the SANDF Doc Centre as I am in Canada! Is there anything that can be done on line? Thanks, Jeremy Sale.

Dean,
Thanks and yes, I did as you may know by now, as I replied personally! I will have to check the cost of research and proceed accordingly. BTW, I have a photo of the crew, would it be appropriate to post it here? If so, how do I do that?
Thanks,
Jeremy.

The log book I have gives details of the 20.03.1943 raid near Mareth on a tank screen and that intense and very accurate Heavy AA was encountered by the Squadron. Heavy AA indicates they were shot at by the Germans famous Flak 88 gun.

Also in the log book entry it is mentioned that Ted Sales aircraft being shot down soon after bomb run by AA.

Hi Jeremy.
If you ask Steve to let me look at it I can look to photograph it for you when I get there again.
You will have to arrange the OK though.
Send me a private email to
stefaan.bouwer@gmail.com and we can arrange something.
Be good
Stefaan

Of course it is a Boston, everyone knows that, Jeremy even mentioned it in his posting ... well, everyone except my keyboard!

I've sent my keyboard to Remedial Aircraft Recognition Class 101 and it has promised never to do that again. 8)

I would like to get a copy of that page if possible, or at least the details. Thanks, Jeremy Sale.
