Correct, 47BDE took a big pounding.
My record of sorties is packed in 'deep-storage' in the RSA, as I no longer live there.
The long hours of sleepless nights of planning strikes paid-off.

Hallo Spice,

I'm very interested in the SAAF activity during the II WW.
In your post of 12 july 2013 regarding the operations of 2 July 1942 you reported the loss of a Douglas Boston (Z2198) of 12 Squadron.
May I ask you which is the source that lists that the Boston " landed safely at its home base, and was then written-off ... due to ‘severe’ battle damage "?
Thank you in advance for your answer.
Best regards.

Marco

Hi mc202

I can't comment on Spice's sources, but the following is extracted from the N°12 squadron war diaries ... from a sortie report dated 2nd July 1942:
"Boston 2198 crash landed on return to L.G.99 with bomb bay doors open. Undercarriage collapsed owing to hydraulic system being shot up by enemy fighter action."

And the accompanying crew list for the sortie lists the crew of 2198:
"Capt. Burniaux; Lt. Ayrie; A/Sgt. Bergh & A/Sgt. Greyvenstein."

Cheers

Hello Kremlin,

thank you very much for your detailed answer though it would be important, for the research i'm doing, to know the source that stated the Boston Z2198 of 12 Squadron was written off.
Thanks again. Cheers.

IIRC: From 12 Sqn Ops Diary and Winston Brent's book '85 Years of SAAF', long time ago and I used multiple sources to compile the posts and to remember the source of every entry, impossible

The first Air-Sea Rescue in South Africa took place. The SA Seafarer, ran aground 300 meters off-shore from Cape Point. The following 17 Squadron Alouettte III’s participated: 53 (Lt Palin; 2Lt Wilkins and Sgt Oosthuizen); 58 (Lt Peters-Hollenberg, 2Lt Briscoe & Sgt Steyn) and 61 (Cmdt Tatham, 2Lt Bartmann and F/sgt Robertson). Alouette 53 conducted the first rescue (hoist).

Where does this information come from? My (late) father (then) Lt JM Oosthuizen was the co-pilot forLt Palin during the rescue mission on 1 July 1966 in Allo 53.

(edit) Here is Lt JM (Jollie) Oosthuizen logbook entry

(edit) According to my boet, this was taken on the day with Lt Palin on the left of my father Lt JM Oosthuizen (Jollie) centre
