Does anyone have any idea which model of the P-38 Lighting was flown by the SAAF pilots during July and August 1943?

The crew were either from 60 or 40 Squadrons or from both, I am not sure. They flew this aircraft mainly as couriers

The model flown and to which USAAF Squadron this aircraft belonged to would is of interest to me, as I would like to add one to my model collection.
