Received reports and photo of SAAF C-130BZ Hercules suffering a nose wheel collapse, possibly this morning. No injuries, but underside of nose may have suffered some damage.

Yep 405.
I heard it doing circuits earlier on.
Must have happened on the taxi back to the apron?
Damage doesn't look extensive.

Hercules 405, happened during start-up for a test flight. When they started the No 2 engine the nose wheel retracted.

I really hope damage is superficial. She looks sad lying on her nose like that...

She must have settled slowly, so hopefully damage not too severe.

Thankfully engines No 3 & 4 were not started, that may have caused the retraction of the entire main undercarriage. :? :(

Engines 3 & 4 were running, already started hence they were feathered, emergency evacuation drills calls for running engines to be feathered.

Engines 3 & 4 drives the booster -hydraulics / flight controls.
Engines 1 & 2 utility hydraulics / undercarriage/ brakes / flaps etc.

On the start of number 2 engine the nose wheel retracted.

Thank you for the clarification 'AT6C', I was unaware of that. Of course, if nothing else, my comment was entirely 'tongue in cheek'. :) :smt023

There is a Herc doing circuits now.

Anyone know whether 405 would be back in the air or could it be 401?

401 came into Ysterplaat late afternoon so it might have been her. 405 flying again that soon is unlikely except if it was a very minor fault with almost no damage, which I doubt.
