I see there are 3 gripens on the apron at Ysterplaat...is this for the opening of parliament?

Oh well, that was boring. 3 ship over the city and then landed. Not even a nice sunset fly past down the beach... :?

Agreed.
I understand that the pilots need flying time, but with the tight budget constraints, it's a complete waste of tax payers money.

This is a point I have been wondering about, whilst it is tradition to include the military. Given the current state of affairs is it necessary?

Another question, which other governments open parliament (or legislative bodies) with a ceremonial military element?

Until this circus stops, it's a total waste. Wanting to uphold tradition, but no guarantee that the speech will take place.

I was opposite Ysterplaat - we got a fly over the base and three Gripens landing. Worth it!

My Question is why they didn't fly out of Ysterplaat? They have been there the whole week and flew from there for the practice runs. Yet yesterday it seems like they flew from Overberg/Langebaanweg or they took off nearly two hours before they were due the fly over as that is the time we got there.

Maybe getting training time in.

Noticed one of the Gripens was carrying a recce pod.

Training hours must be flown, this is a good opportunity to train for away-from-base deployments and maybe even maritime ops.

Yup. The SAAF these days does as much dual-purpose mission tasking as it can, in order to make the best use of its hours. Usually that's incorporating training or practice into scheduled ceremonial or demonstration activities, but sometimes it's the other way around. For instance that mostly misreported story about 2 Squadron Gripens helping to prevent rhino poaching was just a reference to their use of FAR78 for DJRP & LITENING practice and passing on anything of interest to SANParks.

That one of the Gripens at Ysterplaat carried the DJRP is interesting. 2 Squadron has performed a couple of maritime interdictions in the past, showing off their capability as a rapid-response option for identifying unknown ships with their surveillance pods. They've also used that capability against SAN submarines once or twice. :)

Another one that's commonly misunderstood is the Air Capability Demo at Roodewal. While it might seem like an unnecessary waste of money for a demonstration, it's actually vital as a way for both existing aircrew and ground-based forward air controllers to retain their currencies and for new ones to achieve their qualifications.

Was standing on Signal hill when the Grippens came straight over.
Does anybody know which Grippens they were?
Cannot make out any serial number on my pictures.

Armed Forces Weeks are also the biggest all-arms logistics and movement excercises the SANDF gets to do.
