Unfortunately a SAAF C-130BZ went off the runway on landing at Goma a short while ago.

I've been trying to collect the associated information on Twitter.

Early indications are that passengers and crew are not seriously hurt.

Damage is fairly extensive to the left wing, I suspect 403 might be written off.

First hull loss in 50 years  :? . Very sad. I commented on the other forum as to how nice she looked at Barbados on the way to / from Cuba. Hopefully something good will come out of this i.e. time to buy new aircraft.

SAAF Hercules crashes on landing at Goma, DRC

By Dean Wingrin

A South African Air Force (SAAF) C-130BZ Hercules has crashed on landing at Goma International Airport in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) this afternoon.

Initial reports are that the no 1 engine caught fire upon landing, resulting in an extensively damaged left wing.

The aircraft, serial 403, had been deployed in the DRC as part of the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission (MONUSCO). Carrying 59 passengers and 8 crew, the was on its way back to Goma after delivering logistic supplies at Beni. None of the passengers or crew were injured.

First delivered in 1963, the SAAF has eight upgraded C-130BZ Hercules in service, but only two or three are airworthy at any one time. Thus, this is a serious loss for the SAAF.

A Board of Inquiry has been convened.

The link below shows 403 at Recife, Brazil, taken on 23 December 2019 during the flight to / from Cuba.

Aircraft was in Egypt in mid-December, then Cuba late December and now written-off in the DRC early January.

Shows how hard working and valuable the aircraft was.

I've read some media saying this was the only operational Herc in SAAF at this specific time. Is this true?

The SAAF only has two or three Hercules airworthy at any one time, so it is very possible. This aircraft only came out of servicing in November.

Dean
Is there a chance that it might have been shot at? Port engine "exploded" on landing? Could have been a shoulder launched missile, maybe???

Might have been mistaken as a US aircraft, with the turmoil currently going on, anything is possible...
