With the Yantar travelling to Argentina, it brought to mind a ship that was almost resident docked outside the Table Bay Hotel / Woolworths.

Does anyone know what the origin of that ship was and its designation?

Are you thinking of the French telecommunications group Orange Marine's cable ship "Chamarel"?

She caught fire off Namibia in 2012 and was replaced by the "Leon Thévenin".

Similar to the French signals intelligence ship Dupuy de Lôme and the Chinese Yuanwang-5.

Brazilian and Indian sources state it was a Dongdiao-class Spy Ship.

Upon further research, this is actually a missile-tracking reconnaissance ship and was used recently to monitor tye Australian Navy in exercises with the US, New Zealand, Canada and Japan. It was probably one of the other of 5 in service.
