It is SA Navy Festival time again!

From 14 – 16 March 2008 the SA Navy will open its arms and allow anyone and everyone to come and experience their Navy free of charge.

The SA Navy Festival has become a highlight on the Cape’s entertainment calendar with more than 100 000 people attending over the three days.

Some of the attractions at this year’s SA Navy Festival include:

• Free access to most of the SA Navy ships, including the frigates and a submarine. Guided tours will allow members of the public to step onboard these and other vessels and experience what it is to live and work onboard.
• Free access and guided tours to three of the visiting German Navy ships, including two frigates and a very large support vessel.
• Various static displays of life and work within the SA Navy, free tug rides around the harbour, foodstalls, kids entertainment, a flea market and more. The public will also be able to see the new Lynx helicopters from up close.
• Various arena events such as dog shows, fire-fighting displays, gunrun displays (where a cannon is manhandled – and fired – right in front of the crowd!) and a mini tattoo of no less than 4 military brass bands.

In addition to this there are the specific programmed events such as:

• The Navy Band Drydock concert on the evening of Fri 14 Mar at 20:00.
• The Freedom of Entry Parade through the streets of Simon’s Town on Sat morning at 10:00.
• A performance of the Navy Choir on Sat evening at 18:45 in the Simonsberg Cinema Hall.
• The spectacular Night Shoot from Lower North Battery will start on Sat evening at 20:00.
• The Retreat Ceremony will conclude the Navy Festival on Sun afternoon at 17:00.

The gates will be open on all three days from 10:00 – 18:00 every day. Parking is available at Cole Point Gate, Martello Tower Gate and Simon’s Town School.

The SA Navy Festival remains one of the largest Festivals within the Cape Town area due to the large variety of unique attractions. A visit to the SA Navy Festival is well worth for families and kids of all ages will have a fun-filled and exciting day.

Sweet. I've always wanted to see a sub up-close.

Tell me, what is the smoke-like stuff coming out of the ship you have pictured here? I noticed the same thing back at the Waterfront when it was moored there (I don't know if it's the same ship, I can't remember the numbers).

In addition to two MTU diesel engines, the Valour Class frigates are also equipped with a GE LM 2500 gas turbine (jet engine!) with a centreline waterjet.

I think what you're seeing is the exhaust from the gas turbine, the plume behind the frigate is from the waterjet.

Yum.

If I may, I have a few photo's from the Waterfront that I'd like to post here. They aren't as great as yours, but then again I wasn't out with them (the ships) while they were training. :(

But here's 3 of 'em.

Ok, they're different ships. 145 and 146. What is the smoke coming out of F145? Also from the exhaust? Or a exhaust. Whatever powers the lights and such.

The three German vessels from the front.(And yes, I realise that the mountain is skew...)

Aaaand, the three German vessels from the back.

I resized them, and I think I lost some of the quality. They look a bit blurry to me. Are they?
I have loads more, but I like these the most. And I also don't want to chuck a whole lot of pictures in this thread.. but it's still navy-related, so it should be ok, but... I'm going to shut up now.

Oh yeah, did you get my PM asking about the questions?

The grating you see on the right of the last picture is the cooled main engine and gas turbine exhaust. The mist you see in the photo is the generator exhaust.

Welcome back Flightdeck, glad the White Lady returned you home safely (even if you had a detour).

This is what the water jet looks like when you go from 28 kts to a standstill in under 300 meters!

Still.. you get to go on these ships during training exercises, and get to go inside the SAAF. Lucky.
