I doubt it was the French Navy chopper as there was a Civvy Gazelle in that area this past week.

Interesting - belongs to Mamelodi Quarries (PTY) LTD according to the register - but why a ZU
registration?

Nope was not the Gazelle the Dauphin came right over town and turned away from Onrus heading towards Gansbay, spoke to a ret. Airforce Generaal here in town that also confirmed it was the Dauphin as I was not too close to see the markings on the chopper.

None seem to be on the local civil register.

They are once again rubbing the Mistral class against the envious navy/politicians. How many times are they going to try? They even used to take out ads for it in Navy News.
Floreal is a regular visitor. Georges Leygues class is getting a tad long in the tooth.

I wonder what the pastis is like aboard these days. We used to have a fairly regular visitor to Simon's Town back in the seventies in a landing ship called the Argens. She was based in the Indian ocean and would come in for dry docking, etc. The brow would hardly be down and half the SA Navy would be up it. In every mess there used to be large earthenware jugs of pastis - wonderful stuff. Never tasted anything in a bottle as good as whatever the French navy used to supply it's sailors with. Not even genuine Ricard. The beer was lousy though!

She chugs on - despite being overdue for retirement and will continue to do so until the airport at St Helena is constructed. Must say she's still looking mighty good - externally at least - for a veteran of the Falklands war. Originally built in the early 1960s - but extensively refitted in the 70s for her present role.
