She's been a fairly regular visitor here for a number of years along with her sister ship. They come in for bottom scrapes and painting as I don't think they can be dry docked in Reunion.

You are thinking of the fifth ship of the Royal Navy carrying the name HMS Edinburgh, which was indeed sunk by a U-Boat during convoy duties in 1942. Interesting is the fact that she was carrying gold bullion at the time, as payment by the Russians for aid received from the Allies (American & British). This was salvaged in 1981, then worth £45 million pounds Sterling. (Archive history HMS Edinburgh).

The current HMS Edinburgh is the sixth ship of the Royal Navy carrying the name. She is a Type 42 destroyer launched in 1983, displacement 4,800 tons and crew of 26 Officers and 260 Ratings.

Happy viewing!

Did HMS Edinburgh dock in Cape Town harbour?

There was a very brief news item on the web page of my ISP this morning. It was taken off soon afterwards. From memory it said that HMS Edinburgh was to return to Cape Town after the discovery of the second Engineer's dead body. She was female, a 2nd Lieutenant. The body was discovered whilst sailing off the Angolan coast, the ship being on its way to the Falkland Islands, to take up station there.

Any news your side?

Naval officer found dead on HMS Edinburgh

By Michael Powell
Published on Wednesday 22 June 2011 08:50

A FEMALE Royal Navy officer has been found dead on one of the fleet’s destroyers.

Lieutenant Sara Hellawell, 26, who lived in Southsea, was found dead in her cabin by crew mates on board HMS Edinburgh on Thursday.

The Type 42 destroyer – known in the navy as the Fortress of the Sea – was alongside at Luanda Port in Angola, Africa, when Lt Hellawell’s body was discovered.

Reports suggested she took her own life but the navy said the circumstances are under investigation.

The Portsmouth-based warship is due to arrive in Cape Town, South Africa, today and Lt Hellawell’s body will be repatriated to the UK.

She worked as the ship’s deputy marine engineering officer and was responsible for making sure its systems ran smoothly.

Former housemate Michelle Mifflin, who lived with her in Landguard Road, Southsea, spoke of her shock yesterday.

She told the Daily Mirror: ‘A lot of people know Sara. She had an awful lot of friends.

‘She was a really lovely girl and will be very sorely missed.’

A statement from the Royal Navy said: ‘It is with sadness and regret that we can confirm Lieutenant Sara Hellawell, deputy marine engineer officer of the guided missile destroyer HMS Edinburgh, has died onboard her ship.

‘The next of kin have been informed. There will be an investigation and the thoughts and sympathies of the Royal Navy are with her family.’

Edinburgh left Portsmouth on May 26 and will patrol the South Atlantic for the next seven months.

+ 4 Photos ! =D>
Wonderful - thank you!

I tried to tell Mrs Tally-ho about the old song "Die Kaap is weer Hollands ..." and the symbolism behind the singing of that song in the early 1800's when intermittently the Cape changed hands between the two colonial powers . She listened patiently but I could see the symbolism was lost on her - she being a born and bred Brit. Her only comment was "tell Kremlin photo #4 is the best of the lot".

Very well angled with THE Mountain and Devil's Peak in the background!

Cheers. :smt023

The Department of Environmental Affairs, yesterday, Tuesday, 21 June 2011, at 17h00, cancelled the medical evacuation voyage of the Africana vessel to Marion Island.

The vessel was recalled three hours into the 12 to 14 day trip after the SA Military Health Services (SAMHS) withdrew its original recommendation for an urgent medical evacuation of a member of the team at the research base on Marion Island.

The SAMHS has advised the department that the medic on ground has indicated that the patient is now responding favourably to further treatment and thus there is no need for a medical evacuation.

It felt strange looking at her this afternoon, whilst knowing the actual sad reason for her visit :(

I laugh silently in understanding ... Mrs Kremlin is also a born & bred Brit.

I believe (looking at her wiki page) that she is to be de-comissioned around 2013 ..

Well that answers my next question of how a medic on the ground would be able to tell that a patient is responding to the treatment ...

Also in the Waterfront this afternoon was the Nordic Explorer, a Seismographic Research Ship.
