NAVY HOSTS ‘MINI’ NAVY FESTIVAL AT V&A WATERFRONT: 23 – 25 SEPTEMBER 2023

The South African Navy will host a ‘Mini’ Navy Festival at the V&A Waterfront over the period 23 – 25 September 2023 in support of the City of Cape Town’s Freedom of Entry Parade and heritage day celebrations,.

The core aim of the SA Navy is to provide prepared and supported maritime defence capabilities for the defence and protection of the Republic of South Africa. To this end, the SA Navy maintains comprehensive defence capabilities including patrol, surface combat, submarine warfare, human resource and training as well as base support. In turn, this requires the establishment and support of technologically advanced and sustained maritime combat platforms and equipment operated by highlight competent and qualified personnel.

The Mini Navy Festival will afford the South African public (Capetonians in particular) and tourists alike, a rare opportunity to gain insight into the SA Navy’s defence capabilities as well as tour its combat platforms, including a Type 209 submarine.

The following naval vessels will be open to the public:
• The Frigate SAS MENDI
• The Type 209 Submarine SAS MANTATHISI
• The Multi-mission Inshore Patrol Vessel SAS SEKHUKHUNE

SAS Drakenberg will also be in attendance.

Additionally, the programme features various exhibitions and exciting arena activities which include Precision Drill, Officers Sword drill, Sea Cadet Precision Drill and the ever popular SA Navy Band performances.

Navy festival cancelled after submarine tragedy

The Mini Navy Festival, which was scheduled to be held in Cape Town this weekend, has been cancelled.

Tragedy struck on Wednesday when a massive wave knocked mariners off a submarine, leaving three dead and five injured.

On Thursday, Flag Officer Fleet Rear Admiral Musawenkosi Nkomonde confirmed the event had been called off.

"Unfortunately, we had to cancel the festival because of this," he said at a briefing at the Simons Town Naval Base.

News24 previously reported the submarine had been on its way to the V&A Waterfront and was scheduled to be part of the long-weekend event.

The submarine, SAS Manthatisi, was among the craft that would be open to the public during the festivities.

The festival had been scheduled to run from Saturday to Monday.

The original festival took place in Simon's Town, with the last one held in 2017.

The Navy was planning to reintroduce the event to the public.

Nkomonde said all safety measures were in place and the mariners had life jackets.

"Safety is of utmost importance. All the members on board were wearing life jackets," he said.

The crew involved in the exercise will receive counselling.

An inquiry into the incident will commence soon.

"We are still focusing on supporting the victims and those who were injured. This is traumatic," he said.

Something seriously wrong.....

How can there be no Oryx available at Ysterplaat ? All in the Congo and Mozambique.

I remember when the ship Oceanos sank there were five available in 10 Minutes.

So do you want to tell me the complete Air Force base Ysterplaat only have on Helicopter available`?

Think the SAAF have about 6 Oryx active, as per reply in parliament, out of 43 left that aren't WFU or have crashed.
