A Qantas flights from Sydney to Johannesburg recently took off with an extra passenger on board – a 10 tonne Rolls Royce engine.

And while this might seem slightly unlikely, since the Boeing 747 already stamps an impressive silhouette in the sky with four powerful engines and a distinctive upper deck - the 747 does in fact have the ability to carry a fifth engine, fitted between the body of the aircraft and the inner-most engine on the port (left) side of the aircraft.

SAA departing Miamia for JFK to deliver her 5th power egg for a stranded aircraft.

There are a number of aircraft that have this ability, I saw a KLM MD-11 in the hanger with a 4th engine in Montreal.

I think SAA held a record at some point for the longest flight with a 5th pod?

I believe that is so, with the posted SAA picture.

At the risk of going off topic...(SAA 5th engine) this pic from the '60's - Boeing advert - shows the Boeing 707 with a 5th engine on trial for the 727 that was under development. A bit of history
