Today my wife and I attended the local ANZAC (Australia New Zealand Army Corps) Dawn Parade. 25th April is a public holiday in New Zealand and Australia, it commemorates the failed Allied amphibious landing at Gallipoli in 1915 which comprised mostly of British forces but included Australian, New Zealand, Canadian and other troops. Approximately 2700 New Zealanders, 8000 Australians and about 20000 British personnel lost their lives.

It commemorates not only events of that day but all those who gave their lives in all theatres that NZ / Aus operated in. I'm a dyed in the wool South African but for such a small country, New Zealand suffered an inordinate amount of casualties in WW I and WW II but still produced some heroes such as Charles Upham - VC and Bar, the only combat soldier to be awarded the VC twice.

Some other not too well known events include this one:

We shall remember them.
