I'd have expected there to be some press coverage about it though, surely?

Why? Women in all sorts of positions in the police has been "normal" for a very long time.
It's nothing like women fighter pilots, which is a very new thing.

Remember the Railways police? We used to call the women 'Stasie Blompotte'.

Well, the first female parachutists in 44 Bde received some limited media coverage. I would have thought that the SAPS STF being a highly specialist role with unique physical requirements that a female passing selection would have been newsworthy. Like as if a female had become a qualified SF operator... I'm sure that would make the news?

Outside of the SARP, all SARP members were called Stasie blompotte, due to green uniform and beat being up and down the platform.

Jokes aside, the females are given an easy ride as their PT is different, female press up etc. I am of the opinion if you want to join the SF, there is only one standard for all, either meet them or go away, regardless of your sex/race, creed etc

If you can find out when the Police STF got its first female member perhaps we can search news archives of that time.
You seem to be missing my point that it is possible that the STF has had female members for a long time already.
You probably only remember the news about female paras because it is so recent.
The police stopped being sexist about "women at the sharp end" a long time before the military ever figured out that ladies can also fly planes, drive tanks, fire machine-guns, etc.

I served in the SAP and then the SAPS for close on 20 years and the females were always given different PT, different rifle drill etc. Were excused from general Oppies when the whole College was punished on the parade ground on mass.
Even at College they had a seperate mess and ate off plates, cups etc we had vark pan, and tin mugs etc

They were not allowed to stand guard duty etc in the 1990's still

The Israeli's have found from experince that having female soldiers in combat Units ( in operations, not iniside Israel) not good a good practice.
