Residents of Cape Town, please can you tell me what this structure is? Consider the picture located here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Panoramacapetown.jpg

What is the large rectangular concrete structure the appears to be a massive swimming pool? I'm talking the about the one more right of center than the other and appears to have a tower of some sorts poking out of the top end of the water's surface.

Probably the Molteno reservoir - although there are some smaller ones in the area.

Fairly useful for choppers dunking their bambi buckets during mountain fires.

I have a pal who lives just opposite so whenever Table Mountain burns he sits in his jacuzzi with his mik en druk and snaps the choppers loading up - those are his pics.
There are plenty more here if you are interested.

Another shot of the main reservoir ..

The choppers normally fill their bambi's from the race-track shaped reservoir. (the top one on Eugene's third photo)

Interesting structures (and the one you mentioned Brent is very aptly named). Different to the squat cylindrical above ground ones I remember in the 'Vaal.

Do my eyes deceive me or is it a twin-rotor helicopter in this picture? Or are they bent at crazy angles to give that impression?

Your eyes are not deceiving you .. its a Kamov Design Bureau KA-32A. This one also shot at the reservoir in December last year.

Is that the same Kamov that goes to the Antarctic on board SA Aghulas?
