Hi there

I was wondering if someone can explain to me what are the current aircrew wings for the SAAF. I have seen that there are gold, silver and bronze based on the number of hours flown but is this for all aircrew or just pilots? Also, I first thought that all the wings were in metal but I have also seen rubberised versions. Are there cloth and bullion (wire) versions as well?

If someone has photos of the current wings it would be very much appreciated. I believe that one of the forum members (Falcon) put up a post of his wings about 5 years ago but the resolution was not that good when I tried to enlarge the photo and see what writing was in the centre of the wing.

I think the rubberised version has replaced the cloth version, with the metal wings only used on formal dress.

Metal full size wings are worn on tunic, jacket and shirt, reduced size metal wings are worn on mess dress, rubberized wings are worn on camouflage uniform and flying suit. There are unofficial embroidered examples which are permitted to be worn on the flying suit.
